A City That Welcomes Everyone
Frederiksberg Municipality is redefining its public spaces and city nature through a new generation of urban equipment—designed to reflect the city’s unique identity, architectural ambition, and green vision. As a ‘city within the city,’ Frederiksberg has long stood out for its refined urban character. The new furniture system embraces this distinctiveness while ensuring harmony with the broader Copenhagen context. From bus shelters to waste bins, information stands to public toilets, each element is part of a coherent design family—functional, inclusive, and aesthetically enduring.

Q: What defines the new urban furniture concept for Frederiksberg?
A: It’s a cohesive system designed to reflect Frederiksberg’s identity as a modern, green, and architecturally ambitious city. The furniture supports both local character and broader urban harmony with Copenhagen.
Q: How is materiality used to support the city’s vision?
A: Durable and noble materials like steel, oak, and tombac were chosen for their longevity and beautiful patina. These materials age gracefully, echoing the city’s historical architecture while supporting sustainability goals.
Q: What makes the bus shelters stand out?
A: Their simplicity and transparency allow them to blend into the urban landscape. Organic elements like wood and climbing plants connect with Frederiksberg’s green spaces, while thoughtful lighting and glass detailing enhance safety and comfort.
Q: How do other elements like waste bins and info stands fit in?
A: Each piece—from bins to signage—is designed as part of a unified family. They share proportions, colors, and detailing, ensuring visual calm and functional clarity across the city.
Q: What role does sustainability play in the design?
A: All non-organic components are recyclable, and exposed surfaces are easily replaceable. Roofs have been constructed to host native plants in four different nature zones that reflect the surrounding city nature in Frederiksberg. The plants optimize the conditions for insects and birds and contribute positively to the biodiversity and makes the ‘fifth facade’ even more meaningful.
Q: How does the design support inclusivity and accessibility?
A: The furniture is designed to welcome everyone—regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or ability. Clear sightlines, intuitive layouts, and thoughtful detailing ensure comfort and usability for all.
A City That Welcomes Everyone
Frederiksberg’s new urban furniture is more than a design upgrade—it’s a statement of values. It invites residents and visitors alike to engage with the city in a way that is inclusive, sustainable, and visually refined. By combining timeless materials with modern functionality, the furniture system creates a welcoming framework for everyday life—one that respects the past while embracing the future.
The urban furniture is designed in cooperation with AFA Decaux, which holds the contract with Frederiksberg Municipality for the supply, maintenance, and servicing of the new bus shelters, public toilets, waste bins, and defibrillators. The green roofs support the municipality’s climate adaptation.
